It’s that time of year again! 🎃 We're now accepting pumpkin donations for our upcoming fall events!

All of the animals love the pumpkins for enrichment. We will have a marked wagon in the visitor parking lot for drop-offs Monday-Saturday between 8 AM and 4 PM starting tomorrow, 9/17, through 10/24.

All pumpkins can be dropped in the marked wagon between those hours. Please avoid dropping pumpkins off after 4 PM. The wild javelinas are known to enjoy unattended pumpkins…

It’s been a busy year for bear rescues: after two cubs in the spring, a mama and her baby have now arrived at Southwest Wildlife thanks to our partners at Arizona Game and Fish. The bears were found at an apple tree in Payson, with the cub high in the branches and mama on the ground below, fighting for her life. Despite being severely injured, she made sure her sweet baby was fed.

The bears arrived on Thursday afternoon, and it was all hands on deck to get them settled in. Mama bear is in serious condition, with multiple infected wounds, likely from another bear, terrible injuries to both of her eyes, and hundreds of BB pellets in her body. Our veterinary team and partners are doing everything possible, but her prognosis is guarded. We’re taking it day by day.

The cub is thankfully okay. At just 12 pounds, she is severely malnourished and underweight, seeming much younger than she should, but she thankfully didn’t have any injuries and is doing well. Mama bear gave everything she had to protect and feed her baby. Now we will do everything we can to honor that fight and care for them both. 🩵🐻

Happy National Wildlife Day! 🐻🦨🐺

Bruno (M1783) is one of 12 Mexican Gray Wolves we have at SWCC as part of the AZA SAFE (Saving Animals From Extinction) Mexican Wolf Program. There are around 60 facilities in the U.S. and Mexico that participate, housing the captive population of Mexican wolves. Southwest Wildlife does not receive any state or federal funding.

The Mexican Gray Wolf is a subspecies of the gray wolf, commonly referred to as "el lobo," and is the most endangered wolf subspecies in the world. Human expansion into the American Southwest in the early 20th century led to the near extinction of Mexican gray wolves in the United States. By the 1970s, there were only 7 left in the wild. The Mexican Gray Wolf has been recognized as an endangered species since 1976. Since then, populations have been slowly increasing, with a minimum of 286 Mexican wolves now distributed across Arizona and New Mexico. 🌵 We are so grateful to care for these incredible animals each and every day!
